Make time for coffee.. Choped from some random blog was reading

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours
in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of
coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in
front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large
and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then
asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the
jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas
between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was
full. They agreed that it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.
Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the
jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous "yes."

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and
poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty
space between the sand. The students laughed. "Now," said the professor
as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar
represents your life.

The golf balls are the important things --God,your family, your children,
your health, your friends and your favorite passions--and if everything
else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house
and your car.

The sand is everything else--the small stuff."

"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no
room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you
spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have
room for the things that are important to you. "Pay attention to the
things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children.

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee
represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just goes to
show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always
room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."

And so we've decided to hang our flag this year, lazy to hang on other years, Singapore's turning the big forty and needs some support. I wonder why, that every year without fail someone manages to hang the Singapore flag in the opposite direction. I mean, how do you not know you've hung it in the opposite direction, Don't you do a check that the flag is in the right side?

God of fortune is nowhere to be seen these few days, I'd wish he visit my place sometime. Preferably with a windfall, I promise to be at home to recieve and welcome him. hee..

Hell had no fury like a doi's wrath. Doi's gonna flip when she finds out what I've written here, but no body reads this anyway like Freddy says, lest he removes his blog(which links me) from the freaking MSN. So we're at war with Arts after some incident which happened during the dry runs(actually I sorta know but it's like most of you know liao so.. ) ,I'm unsure of happened cos I was drinking alcohol at some foreign land listening to Michelle sing. Anyway,Doi's demanding an apology from the Arts President. I don't know if he has come to apologise yet. I bet they think it's a laughable affair. One should hear how she disparages that faculty. It's damn funny. I think she's something to be able to hold up to something like that. I know not what I just wrote. Forget it.

Messy, messy, messy. Managed to get it together in the end. Saw a few familiar faces. Then had to go do log stuff.

And so, despite my disapproval, mInG went for the chalet anyway. Frankly, I don't see a point in him going. It's all so couply there Bc& f, Zer & hj, SJ & m , Ber & yx and he'd be the odd one out. I almost feel sorry for him.

I don't understand the perpetual feud between C.H.E.S.S? and Engin. Just today, doi said they recruited an ME girl into their O week. What the!? That's so unethical, what's the poor girl going to do with all those chem eng Frens that she don't see half the time! Plus she doesn't even have a class in Chem Eng. This has got to be the dumbest thing I've ever heard.I observe that the hostility between Chess? and Engin is only dominant among the top levels of the hierarchy , I wash my hands of it.
Anyway, Day Zero tomorrow! It will be a success! woot!!

I would want to rant about being outbidded when the bid before close bidding was 600, it shot up to 1100. It is absolute injustice. Checking the bidding statistics reveal that no business ppl is taking that module. All the slots allocated for them remain bidless. What in the world is this? Moreover I'm so sick of people asking me what modules I'm going to take. I'm going crazy.

I was at Sch at the Dean's tea to recruit freshies for O week. It was great. I never knew I knew so many people(girls). The committee got their jersey. Mine was well, Kakashi 6! It was supposed to be white with red words but they don't have so we changed to red with white words.

Lolx.. We became sorta like an infomation booth Counter for freshies to ask questions. One senior wanted to join us for the flag day only, That's an awfully weird request. The more the merrier at rag day, they say. It's a newer design than the o camp one. The o camp one is v neck, ours is round neck and it's more comfortable, IMOH. So the o week freshie list is almost full. As usual we have an excess amount of guys on waiting list and insufficient gals. I think we can take a breather at the matric fair this Thursday.

It stands for centralised online registration system
The bidding system that everyone curses about. Why? Cos it periodically breaks down and over load when massive number of kiasu students login at the last minute to check the closing bid when in fact all they can really do is to check the info on the main page for the last bid.
Also one of the most common Msn nicks among NUS students during the bidding period.

Engin canteen
Touted one of the worst canteen in NUS. Renovated last sem 05 cos ppl complain about it being bad. Food is a bit better but IMOH it still sucks. The new jap store which sells jap food is not really very nice. The western is slightly overpriced for a piece of tiny meat. If you want to go for fullness can try the vegetarian or Indonesian curry cuisine.

NUS student 1 : Don't want la.. food there sucks.. let's go arts.. scenery there is nice oso..

It's only concession is that it offers ventilation in the canteen unlike Arts or science where the canteens are so stuffy.

NUS email
Check periodically cos those people at OSA likes to send random junk mails that I don't give a rat's ass about. Then they'll send u a warning email in your own mail to say your mail is full, pls empty it.

Ivle
It stands for integrated virtual learning environment. It's basically a student portal that allows you to access lecture notes, tutorials and past year exam papers for your modules.
It also allows u to create a sort of forum to communicate between groups of people in NUS. With the advent of version 7.6, it now has a blog function to allow blogging in Ivle.
Remember not to put a www.ivle.nus.edu.sg cos you will not be able to access it. Unlike cors which require you to put a www in front(aka www.cors.nus.edu.sg), ivle does not. It updates itself every semester. Now it has a blue background when it used to have an orange one.
It's only usefulness is it's acess to previous year exam function.

Central library
The place to do your research if you're really lazy to go the newly open National library to do. Books as reference are very important as it will give the tutors knowledge that you actually put in some effort in the essay/thesis. Nearing the exam periods, people will be camping at the top floor of the Library, which is a study area to mug. The area is carpeted so the muggers don't fall down and break themselves. It's really ridiculous, the library opens at 8 and at 830 you can't find any place in the Library to sit down during the exam periods. What I hate is those people who book places using their books or sweaters and leave to go somewhere. As I always hear, If you can't beat them, join them. Just make sure you put something that is of no value to you, like some old textbooks or your dean lister's certificate. Anyway, NUS is a safe place, I've seen people leave their handphones laptops and wallets at their desk and coming back without ever losing them.

Co-op
Located below the library, it's a place where people buy their 1st hand books. IMOH if you can get a second hand one, get it.We poor, impoverish students spent the most on books which we're just gonna use for one freaking Sem.Unless you really cannot find 2nd or 3rd hand ones get the new copy. New books are great and have great resell value too. Just recommend the module you took to your fren and make them buy your book.

Buses.
Shuttle Buses are free aka no need to pay unlike in some other university west of Singapore. They basically go everywhere. A1 A2 goes basically the same route but different directions. B goes from Business to Engin C goes from Science to Engin. Buses are always full 15 minutes before the hour during school time because students rush to wait for them to go to another lecture in a different faculty.
Be careful when taking buses from the old university hall bus stop. If the sign says Kent vale DO NOT Take it. It'll really take you to KENT VALE which is a bus docking bay in which the buses rest for 10 minutes or more before coming back to the campus.
I made the hapless mistake of taking that bus to Kent Vale when I was still a Freshie and no one told me about it.

UCC
University cultural hall.
The place where it all began and ended. It began with all the deans and professors in funny hats and oversized gowns introducing themselves to the freshmen and welcoming them at the inaugration on 1 aug next week mon.And ending up in gowns themselves at the commencment.

Chess and Engin Club.
Every one in Engin is automatically in Engin club once you matriculate and pay a misc fee to the club no matter wat.Chess is a club especially for Chem engin people. This has always caused a feud between the two opposing committee. Only Chem engin have their own o'week and camp where the people of the senior classes will acquaint the freshie of the junior classes. The rest of the engin people can join the normal o week. Chem engin freshies may also join but due to conflicting interest, tensions may arise. This year, chem engin are joining Engin o week for the flag collecting in hopes of getting more money for the charities.

RAG
This year is the centennial year and the rag head, Tre really hopes to win the rag this year. He has spent a lot of effort in preparation for the RAG and hopefully he will win it for Engin, together with Junli's coordination of the RAG dance.

Printing room.
Located along the stretch to E1, it's a place to go buy your lecture notes. Notes are good but expensive. But less expensive than if u print it yourself. So buy the notes anyway.

Computer centre
2 computer clusters. One at E2 lvl 4, other one is in front of E5 near the engin bridge. Good for printing tutorials and checking of online soccer results. Msn doesn't work on those computers. Will only have to use web MSN to chat with friends. Printing cost is 5 cent per side, pay by cashcard.

LT 7a
IMOH it's one of the best Lt around lest for the incessent smell when you first enter it. All yr one Engin modules lectures are held there unless you happen to be an Elitist Chem Engineer in which some of the lectures are held at LT7, slightly up the building. The place where the big hoo ha of Cuiwen proposal was at.

Engin Ratio
Yes the rumors are true, the ratio is really pathetic unless you are in Chem engin or ISE or BIE in which the ratio is about 1:3 which is also pretty much the best it gets. Heaven for gals I guess.

Engin Dress sense.
It's pretty much the same as the rest of the school, Except that because Engin has more guys, guys like to dress in dull coloured clothes and very intelligent people on scholarship from other countries, they don't dress up that much cos they don't have the captial. So the overall atmosphere in the lecture is dull coloured. Whereas other faculty has much much more girls and girls like to wear bright, sunny coloured clothes which makes the atmosphere seem so much better. Really it's a matter of subjectivity.

Give me $400 000 too !! Thanks! Is it just me or is our society rapidly becoming a joke. Singapore spends $400 000 on finding a new name for Marina bay only to settle on it's orginal moniker. If it wasn't an international company but a local one, I'm sure it'll recieve blasts from all over. Give me S$10 000 anytime to rename it back to the same name. Heck, I'll even take S$1000 dollars or less.

These days I kinda wished my bulk of daily activities include a post-noon wake up and a berth of non-existant activities in which I lie wide awake thinking about nothing. But with the holidays drawing to a close and the NTU people are back to school next week, that also means NUS will also be busy. Busy with orientation week, matriculation fair and a slew of post-camp Og outings. That will also mean selection of cross faculty modules with comes in a variety that will dazzle your brains out. Time spent on cors website will subsequently increase as I browse through online module info like a victoria's secret online catalogue, completely familiar yet french to me. The thing that aches my head most are the arts gem and Sartor that I'm required to complete before the graduation. I haven't a slightest idea which modules to select, soliciting the opinions of my peers are useless, seeing that most of them are as clueless as I am.

The massive amounts of terrorism happening around the world ain't helping with the mood. First it was London then it was Egypt this saturday morning.I cannot begin to imagine a world where children grow up in an environment constantly terrorized by extremist with no apparent motive. Years from now, children will most likely be apathetic about the constant bombings as it has become part and parcel of their daily reads. I feel sadden by this kind of atmosphere that the world is currently in.

What is the world coming to? I got a shock that the Chinese had decided to allow a more flexible currency rate admist the mounting pressure from the states and European countries. Malaysia followed shortly after to change the monetary policies, this means more expensive overseas buys from JB and China and London police has shot a man believed to be carrying explosives on board a subway train after being bombed twice. This is a such tragic thing. Damn u terrorism!

Last night's night cycling's great, although I was very tired. Only 3 gamer freshie went. I was a bit surprised that cheekiong didnt go.He's one of the most on ppl I know. But most of the gamer councillors went which was great. I heard toxic was not informed of the night cycling so none of them went.

Xiaxue's blog got hacked.wonky tong too.. Lolx. Terrorism on the net too? hai~ It's just not right. I don't like terrorism in any form.

I know the ending to Harry potter and the half blood prince!! It's just so sad so so sad.

Nus cors and ivle(student net portal) just change a new look. I'm not used to looking at the new interface. Guess I'll just have to make do with it.

Bangkok Rocks.. I miss the days when I was in Bangkok, where the food are inexpensive and we bargain for cheap thrills. This would be the first and hopefully not the last trip I go with my friends. We stayed at Eastin Hotel where it was the first time I recieved such first class treatment. It feel sorta weird yet sastifying.

At night when we're free, we would loiter around the lounge area to listen to Michelle, the Hotel's resident singer and panist, sing. She sang really well, and if anyone clapped she would thanked them. First night, we had complimentary drinks . Second night, Kiat had a kuhula , Bernard had a Singapore Sling, I had a Magarita. Third night, Kiat had an Alexander Ber had a Daiquiri, I had a pink lady.

I learnt to swim while I was at the hotel pool It is actually very easy, but I think I need more time to practise.

On the flight back I met Izzy, a blogger which I used to read until she moved to an undisclosed location. Okay, She must have felt really weird cos she just woke up from the flight when I tapped her and was nodding her head all the way, but I really admire her writings. Then at the DFS we met Shuyu who just came back from Taipei. What a coincidence!Then the second day, she came for the fright night which Doina prematured ended cos the Prof Tan found out while his pants are down. (long story)

This trip has been a wonderful trip where I got to know my friends a bit better and acquiant two amazing gorgeous girls who are just great to be with.

People are mad, people are furious, people have cancelled monthly giro subscriptions just because they don't feel like paying for the CEO's 600k 12 mth salary, first class travels and unjustified pricy toilet fittings.And because NKF boasted about the number of patients and has enough reserves to last for 30 years, not 3 years as he claims. People would rather donate to a more reliable & transparent organization.Damn no wonder they dropped the defamation case after 2 days, so no more dirt will be dished out. I wonder how many more there are.

Fright night dry runz..
Being a ghost is strenous to the voice and VERY tiring, it's irritating to see some of the people (yr 2->3) councillors being sarcastic at the ghost. But, overall it was fun. Groups with girls are definitely the most fun to scare. Looking forward to the next dry runz fright nightz.

Today was pretty good.Except, it was raining the whole day and we went to Sentosa for dry Run.Had to cut the final game cos the storm clouds in the far horizon looked menacing. Chess camp had it worse, it's their actual camp and it rained like half the day. Tried to Dunk Doi but her Bf protected her. Damn! Anyway, the log team was quite terrible la, we were playing cards and soccer and netball when the councillors were playing the games. Then Leo and us went over to Silso to check out the Chess babes. Okay I admit, we were quite slack. Wx kept wanting us to bond with the councillors, but I think its he himself who wanted to bond. heh.. Hope he doesn't read this.

Shilin got a new product! Sweet and sour Tempura. Haven tasted it though. hope It's good though.

CosFest! Went to the Cosfest 05 at Downtown east! There were lots of people there. Most of them to see people dressed up as anime characters. On the way there, we met Zw and Gf, what bad Luck! Anyway, I saw Pamela dressed up as Aeris, that flower girl who met cloud selling flowers in FF7 and Adeline dressed up as some Bleach death god. And there was this other girl dressed as Cloud,Pamela and that fake cloud girl pretended to kiss for photos.

There's this small girl that was dressed up as Kusajika Yachiru, Co-captain of Zaraki Kenpachi of the 11th squad from Bleach, which was instantly recognisable. It was like Yachiru jumped out of the pages and turned into real life character. There were a whole group of them dressed up as death gods, various captians from various squads,Abari Renji,Kyouraku Shunsui 8th squad captain,Urahara kisuke,the guy that taught ichigo how to fight, the Quincy dude Ishida with the arrow,a few ichigos and there was a big Kon, the mod soul, walking around.

There's this girl whom I don't recognise who she's cosplaying as, she was holding an apple and a note book that says DEATHNOTE. Then I realise Deathnote. Ah hahahaa..She's with L and chained up with that other guy

And then there was Naruto, and Gaara, this guy was carrying around the sand gourd and some ppl wearing the anbu's mask. There's this group from D grey man manga. Not forgetting to mention people in Fantastic four costume, one batman, one predator dude, one of the gunbound machines,Kingdom hearts characters,one in SWAT costume, and a scream killer, few people in gundam costumes, the robot girl in chobits, one darth vader, one clone trooper,obiwan and a few jedis, battle royale ppl(people in school costumes that were splattered with blood doing para para dances),Yuna, FMA people Greed, gluttony, lust, roy mustang,edward,inuyasha people, Yugioh characters, Kaiba, who had like 3 blue eyes white dragon and Mokuba and the Mc was supposed to be NEO. And people wearing Seigaku T-shirts from Prince of Tennis.Yakitate! GundamThis girl with a cat ears and shorts, I don't know who she is.

For a moment there I thought Singapore was under attacked by bio-terrorist.It turns out they accidentially poured the Sodium Hypochlorite, use to balance the neutrality of the water(NaOCl) into the HCL, use to bring it to more acidity if the swimming pool water is too alkaline to produce Sodium hydroxide and chlorine gas.
NaOCl + HCl ==> NaOH + Cl2
Chlorine gas is poisonous.
Chlorine gas was used in WW1 by the germans to cause respiratory damage to the allied soldiers. It can destroy the respiratory organs of its victims and this led to a slow death by asphyxiation. If I'm one of the people involved in the incident, I'll sue the Safra club for causing bodily damages and emotionally damages. What's stopping the terrorist from sneaking into any swimming pool to mess with these chemicals?

Instead, I'm gonna do a cursory mention of what I did. Today, we did bloody dolls and scary stuff ,which exudes our sadistic nature, for the fright night. Okay.. that was brief.

It was not until Fred msn-ed me that I realise Justin of suburbia is in London. I think that most probably he's alright. Nothing to worry about. Just hope we hear from him soon.

So I went for OG outing. It was at Kster at Lucky Chinatown. It came up to 9 bucks per person which was pretty cheap as far as KTV-ing goes. So of all the people, only like maybe four KTV-ed regularly. The rest don't sing. JunZ sang the best, I think, despite her flu which made her voice sound more sorey(is that a word?) Engkiat sang the worst, I think, when he sang most of us took a toilet break. It's all in the name of fun. He's a really cool guy. No offence to him or anything. I think our group shouldn't socialise too much. We're all such Onz people that we have so many different commitments, not to mention our interests diverge. It's very hard to organise when people do not reply or give ambiguous reply. So me dare predict that this will be our first and only outing. Unless we have a house outing, which is near impossible since there is noone to organise it.

London bombings not connected to recent London winning the 2012 olympics?
Even if the bombings are connected, the IOC will have to say it's not for obvious reasons; to allay any fears that the olympics is causing terrorist attacks. In any case, they will surely be better prepared come 2012. It's attacks like these that make people racially intolerant. My fren just declared he hates Muslims. Nothing I say could sway him the other way. I will not pity him if he gets beaten up for being intolerant.
What I do pity is the NSF that are doing duties now. If the whole of europe is put on high alert, that means that the men and women of the SAF are also on high alert. That means more prowling, more checking , more sai gang for people to do.Oh am I ever so glad I've Ord-ed.

There's something about Frankie. Today, we got a new member! His name is Frankie. He's a bit stoney but once you get to know him it'll be all right. Everybody should get to know Frankie.He's a really nice guy. He's slightly taller than wx who has this infatuation with comparing heights with people. Anyway, even though Frankie doesn't speak much, everybody took an instant liking to him. The ME timetable is Out. It's a bit unreadable at first,they should make it more user friendly but I think I got the gist of it. It's standard. Every day 9-10 morning tutorials, 10-12 some lecture, 2-5 Lab. Arghzz. I think I'm going nuts. I know so many people in ME that I don't know to bid the tutorials with who.(four grps of different ppl to be exact) Maybe I'll just put some random choice and hopefully I can get some tutorial with Chiobus. Ya right, who am I kidding, Engine where got Chiobus. Therefore, I'm going with my 54 team letter.

So the Brits won. I was rooting for French to win. It was for the best anyway. London's presentation video was, in my honest opinion, better than the rest of the countries. I wonder if you can download it anywhere.

I find it progressively harder to meet up with friends as our level of commitment for other activities increases. Four people living four separate lives, having to change the plans four times just to suit one another's schedule. In the end all worth the effort. I wonder if we'll remain good friends enough to still make plans to go out once we're working. It's so nice to catch up and talk.

Itunes keep upgrading with features I really could without, like popcast and radio, it's really annoying to keep updating. I mean I don't really need such features. Stop bugging me to upgade!

There's something that is deeply disturbing when the best laid plans of mice and men go awry. It's like the elusive friction that you forget to take account for in your calculation, even though subconciously, you know it's there. It's just a downright reprehensible action to flake on the plans you just merticulously laid; I wouldn't exactly use merticulous cos I thought it up on the way to getting my thumb bruised by badly pieced cutting apparatus.

Hey.. that's like the "Wimbledon" the movie in which the guy(Paul Bettany ) decides to retire last season then get to the finals this season, except he wins the game(i think) and he's not world number one. I think Davenport will finally retire (at the age of 29, What the!) and start a family which she had always wanted.

I need to check my NUS mail more often. Correction. I need to CLEAR my NUS mail more often. It keeps getting cluttered with mails I don't give a damn about. Cos if u type Yr 1 eng(or something similar) in the mail you can basically send the mail to every freaking year 1 in Eng. That, would be a great way to send gossip.

It's a good thing that the IOC decided to come to town to decide the 2012 location for the games Top sporting icons and people would lend their voices for the bid. i.e David Beckham, Raul Gonzalez, Muhammad Ali, and head of states including Tony Blair and Jacques Chirac would be coming to town!
